Jerry Richardson is a former American football player who, after his playing days were over, became a successful businessman and owner of the Carolina Panthers. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of the NFL, and his achievements in the sport have earned him numerous accolades and honors.
Richardson was born on July 18, 1936, in Spring Hope, North Carolina. He attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he played football and baseball. After college, he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and went on to play two years in the NFL as a wide receiver.
After his playing career, Richardson started a successful fast-food franchise, Hardee's, which he eventually sold for a considerable profit. In 1987, he was awarded an NFL expansion franchise, the Carolina Panthers, and served as the team's owner until 2018.
During his time as owner of the Panthers, Richardson was highly respected for his hands-on approach to team management, which included working personally with players and coaches. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the area of education.
In 2018, Richardson announced that he would sell the Panthers following allegations of workplace misconduct. He was inducted into the Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor in 2019.
